Art Basel. Mecca to contemporary art trailblazers. The one and only art fair that is a must in the calendar. The one and only art fair able to attract the best international art galleries and artists, substantial parallel programmes taking place in private foundations, public venues and museums and boutique alternative art fairs.
LISTE is usually my favourite second fair to visit, coinciding with the main fair. It is the place to discover the new and exciting talent. However, on this edition, I felt LISTE was lacking much excitement. I saw works by artists I am already familiar with and have spoken on the blog about, which was great but nothing new. I also visited the Kustmuseum Basel and Schaulager, both gems are hosting the most comprehensive retrospectives of works by Sam Gilliam and Bruce Nauman respectively.

DAY 1: LISTE Art Fair
DIS Collective curated the Berlin Biennale 2016
A stunning Daiga Grantina’s work features in this video interview to collector Victor Benady, as part of the series Collectors at Home.
Speaking with the artist at the fair, Avakian described the focus of his work in “materialising data as sculpture”. Find more examples of Vartan Avakian’s work in this article focused on artists from the Middle East.
DAY 2: Kunstmuseum Basel and Schaulager
Bruce Nauman as part of Disappearing Acts at Schaulager
There is something very soothing and comforting in the constant and familiar forward movement of a clock’s hands. The double projection on wall and floor was originally created for the 10th Tokyo Biennale in 1970 where it was presented in black and white on two monitors. Naaman updated the work in 2009 for the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009.
DAY 3: Art Basel and Unlimited
Francis Alys, Tornado, 2000-2010 at Art Basel Unlimited
Francis Alÿs visited an area in the Mexican countryside where tornadoes occur, and filmed his attempts to run into the eye of the storms. The footage was gathered over a decade and edited to make the intense video Tornado 2000–10. For Alÿs the dust storm suggests the imminent collapse of a system of government or political order. A time of new possibilities.
