I intended to write early on in the year about three artists whose work I’m looking forward to seeing more of and here it is, on the last day of January…
If you would like to browse through the many other artists whose work I have written about already, you can check them in the Emerging Artists, Collector Focus and Studio Visit sections.

Jennifer Packer (American, b. 1984) Her muddled impasto speaks of tenderness and affection but it carries the strength of convictions and deep belief in ideas of belonging and identity. Her sitters as well as the still lives show closeness and familiarity without hiding their mysteries, complexities and, in some cases, impenetrability.
James English Leary (American, b. 1982) A cross of biomorphic abstractions and cartoonish figuration. His signature sprayed shadows gives the images and the paintings an object-like quality. Expect humour and deadpan commentary on the overlapped symbols and primary colour scheme.
Ridley Howard (American, b. 1971) The romantic inside Tom Welsselmann. Figures with a graphic quality and pastel hues become the basis of Howard’s form and colour calculated compositions. Sophisticated women and high-life scenes offer a glimpse into a larger narrative inspired by film and media imagery.
